Nantucket Harbor is a great place to visit; a journey from anywhere is well worth the time and effort. Transient mooring can be tough to get in July and August; book a mooring ahead of time. Plenty of shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance of the docks. A launch is available but make inquiries for hours of operation; these services do get swamped at times. When sitting on a mooring, you can still get a sense of people on the church steeples looking out the channel to see what whaling boat is coming into port.

Our visit to Nantucket started in Marion, so navigating Wood Hole was the first challenge. We stopped in Oak Bluffs and then continued onto Nantucket. On the return voyage, we stopped at Woods Hole to save a long day on the water and make the passage through Wood Hole safer and on time for a slack current.
Here is some information on the whole Island, the beaches, and downtown;
Downtown Nantucket is always a good time, but it can get very crowded during peak season. After taking a long sailing trip, exploring the Island more by bike or renting a car or SUV is also good. We rented an SUV one day and rode out to Great Point Lighthouse and all around the Island in one day.

One place you MUST visit is the Whaling Museum, which is worth an afternoon exploring. Here is a website to the Whaling Museum, a great website to look thru for a wealth of information about this long-gone era
